Speakers

Nancy Goldman  

Nancy Goldman is Head of the Pacific Film Archive Library & Film Study Center at the UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive. She directs all aspects of the PFA Library & Film Study Center, including providing reference and access to collections of books, periodicals, stills, posters, documentation files, and films and videos. She also coordinates future planning for the unit, supervises cataloging, and manages CineFiles, PFA’s film document digital image database.

Nancy has both a Masters degree in Library and Information Studies and a B.A. in French from UC Berkeley. She is the Head of the Cataloguing and Documentation Commission of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF), regularly teaches seminars on film cataloging and bibliography, and is an active writer and speaker in the field of moving image archiving.

 Jane D. Johnson

Jane D. Johnson is MIC Project Manager for the Library of Congress. She has worked on the initiative since its inception, providing technical expertise and working with developers, participants and end users to develop an effective portal for preservation and access to moving images of all kinds. She was a working cataloger for twenty years, at the UCLA Film and Television Archive, the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Jane now works for the Library of Congress from New Jersey, as Visiting Scholar at Rutgers University Libraries. She serves on the Board of Directors of the Association of Moving Image Archivists, and has given numerous presentations on MIC, moving image cataloging, and media asset management.

 Andrea Leigh

Andrea Leigh is Metadata Librarian at the UCLA Film & Television Archive. She has a B.A. in theater arts and MLIS with a specialization in moving image archive studies from UCLA. She has worked in various capacities in libraries and archives both in the public and private sectors, including positions at Creative Artists Agency, the Walt Disney Company, Cal State University, Northridge and at the UCLA Library. She is currently the Steering Committee Chair for Moving Image Collections, a collaborative project between the Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA) and the Library of Congress. She is active in both AMIA and the Society of American Archivists, and has published articles related to the cataloging and description of moving images in Cataloging and Classification Quarterly and The Moving Image.

Amy Lucker

Amy Lucker is Library Director at the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University. Prior to coming to NYU she was Head of Technical Services and Slides & Digital Imaging at the Fine Arts Library of Harvard University . While at Harvard she became involved in issues surrounding moving image cataloging when the Fine Arts Library became administratively responsible for the Harvard Film Archive. Amy has also held positions in the libraries of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art and at the Avery Library of Columbia University. She holds a Master of Science in Library and Information Science from Simmons College, as well as an M.A. in Classics from the University of Wisconsin , Madison and a B.A. in Classics from Colby College. Throughout her career Amy has been involved in many professional organizations, including ARLIS/NA (Art Libraries Society of North America ) and VRA (Visual Resources Association). She currently co-chairs two committees for these organizations to implement and plan for the ARLIS/VRA Summer Educational Institutes; week-long workshops designed to provide a standardized and sustainable program for visual resources training, with a focus on issues related to digital collection management and item-level image metadata.

Lee Mandell

Lee Mandell is the Design Team Manager for the Archivists' Toolkit project. He received a B.S. in Computer Science from Northeastern University in 1987. He has spent 18 years working with museums, libraries and archives focusing on visual and archival collections management systems. He also spent 7 years working in the pre-press industry helping develop image manipulation tools as well as managing digital work flows. He is also a visual artist focusing on photography and sculpture.

Madi Solomon

Madi is the former Corporate Nomenclature Taxonomist for The Walt Disney Company, a post she left last August. She is currently an independent consultant based in London (UK). At Disney, she was responsible for the development of their core metadata standards and best practices and continues to work with them on the development of their Moving Image Core metadata model.   She was a member of their Media Technology Board Media Asset Mngmt. Working Group; Chair of the Standards & Policies Taskforce; Chair of the Nomenclature Forum. Currently, she is Co-chair of the Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA) Metadata and Cataloging Joint Committees; a member of the Library of Congress’ Moving Image Collections (MIC) Cataloging and Metadata Working Group and Speakers Bureau; contributor to the  ISAN (International Standard Audiovisual Number) Identification Best Practices for Audiovisual Works sponsored by the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America). Prior to joining Disney, she was Project Associate at the Getty Information Institute in Network Initiatives in Standards and Vocabularies, and Curatorial Assistant for the Broad Art Foundation.  She frequently speaks at conferences on metadata and taxonomies for rich media.

Linda Tadic

Linda Tadic has 20 years experience managing and cataloguing film, digital, and broadcasting collections. She is currently Director of Operations for ARTstor, a digital image library. Previous positions include Manager of the Digital Library at Home Box Office (HBO); Digital Projects Coordinator at the Getty Research Institute; and Director of the Media Archives and Peabody Awards Collection at the University of Georgia. She was president of the Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA) from 1998-1999, was chair of its Cataloging Committee from 1994-1997, and is currently chair of its Digital Initiatives Committee. Ms. Tadic is an adjunct professor at the Moving Image Archiving and Preservation Program at New York University. She has an MLIS from the University of California at Berkeley, an MFA from UC San Diego, and BFA from California Institute of the Arts.

Jason Varghese

Jason Varghese is a programmer/analyst for the digital library program at NYU where he is currently working on the Archivists' Toolkit project. Prior to joining NYU, Jason was the senior developer and lead programmer for the Health Education Assets Library, a component of the National Sciences Digital Library. He has a B.S. in computer engineering from the University of Oklahoma and an MBA from the University of Central Oklahoma.
